Green Area Development
Plymouth Square
In order to underline the mutual co-operation between Gdynia and Plymouth, the City Council of Gdynia decided to name a park in Gdynia (situated at the junction of streets: Świętojańska and Marsz. J. Piłsudskiego, in front of the Gdynia City Hall) Plymouth Square. In September 1997 Plymouth sent jonquil bulbs to Gdynia that were later planted in the Square. Another English element in the Square is the characteristic telphone booth, presented to Gdynia by Plyouth. Furhtermore, in August 1999, Gdynia received from Plymouth a document including directions and photos that were to help to develop the park in such a way taht it would gain an English character. It is planned that the works in the Square will consist of changing of the elements of small architectrue, improvement of the aesthetics of the park and enriching of the plants with new species of trees, bushes and flowers. The benches and the dustbins in the park are also planned to be changed.
Kiel Park
The co-opeoration between City Gardeners of Gdynia and Kiel was established in 1996. After reciprocal visits to Kiel and Gdynia tere emered an idea to develop the area in Gdynia (in the vicinity of the following streets: Morska-Wiejska-Chylońska) in co-operation with the German partner. This area was named "Kiel Park". The Gemran side prepared the land development conception and on this basis the construciton and executive project was created. In 1999 the realisation of the first stage of the construction of the Park was finished. The first stage covers 1,2 hectare (the whole area of "Kiel Park" amounts to 4 hectares). The realistation of the first stage of construction works started on 15.09.1998 and was finished on 12.06.1999. The total cost of realisation of the first stage amounted to 1 000 000 zlotys.
The scope of works in the first stage of realisation of the Park:
- - pavements, a bicycle path, lighting system, elements of small architecture (benches, dustbins, playground designed by the German side, with origianl amusement equipment, embankments helping to vary the natural relief, tables for manual games)
- - planting the greens (lawns, planting of 45 trees and about 850 bushes)
- - installation of irrigation system and a container toilet. Within the celebrations of the 15th anniversary of co-operation between Kiel and Gdynia, the Kiel City Hall offered a seesaw and a slide for the "Kiel Park".
In the second (and at the same time the last) stage of the construction of the Park for the sum of 1 850 000 zlotys, the river Chylonka was regulated, the water-supply system installed, three sports fields were built and bridges constructed as well as seesaws, sandboxes, etc. installed.
Twin Cities Avenue
Participants of the 10th Twin Cities Sporting Competition originated the symbolic Twin Cities Avenue on 11th May 2002. The Avenue is located on the junction of Borchardta and Armii Krajowej Street in the Council of Europe Park. It symbolises close contacts between Gdynia and its twin cities. Representatives of Baranovichi, Karlskrona, Kiel, Klaipeda, Kaliningrad and Liepaja participated in the ceremony of Avenue opening. By planting symbolic trees, they gave voice to their friendship with Gdynia. In September 2002 on the occasion of presenting Gdynia with the Europe Prize, the representatives of some of its twin cities, that is Aalborg, Seattle and Kristiansand planted the trees of friendship. Also the representatives of the Council of Europe who came to Gdynia for the ceremony planted their tree. On 1st May 2004 during the 12th Twin Cities Sporting Competition a tree was planted on the occasion of Poland's accession to the European Union.
