STI INSPECTION VISIT

Between 23rd-25th February 2009 the executives of Sail Training International visited Gdynia. The delegation included Christer Samuelsson - the Chairman of The Tall Ships' Races (Europe) Limited, Peter Newell - Race Director, Corinne Hitching - Media Manager and Sue Pelling - Media Manager of Race One. The aim of the visit was the assessment of the degree of preparations of Gdynia to the organisation of the Tall Ships' Races 2009 (Gdynia, 2-5 July 2009). During their stay in Gdynia the STI representatives met all sections of the Organisational Committee and took part in study visits to the places strategic for the Races. All matters regarding the organization of the Tall Ships' Races were discussed in detail and Gdynia`s arrangements for receiving the vessels were highly evaluated.

17TH TWIN CITIES SPORTING COMPETITION IN GDYNIA

17th Twin Cities Sporting CompetitionOn 6-9th May 2009 the 17th Twin Cities Sporting Competition in Gdynia was organised. Apart from Gdynia team young sport teams from Karlskrona (Sweden), Kaliningrad (Russian Federation), Kiel (Germany) and Liepaja (Latvia) were participating in this year's edition. They competed against each other in the following sports: football (boys), basketball (girls), orienteering (boys and girls) and table tennis (boys and girls).

Gdynia was the winner of all games in the general ranking. It won the first place in football and basketball and scored the highest number of points in total. In two other sports the representatives of Karlskrona prevailed - they were first in the table tennis as well as in the orienteering. Thanks to this Karlskrona team was second in the general ranking. The next teams in the ranking were: Kaliningrad, Kiel and Liepaja. The European Race, held on the Bulwar Nadmorski in Gdynia finished the17th Twin Cities Sporting Competition.

"CAR-FREE DAY" GRANT COMPETITION

Since 2005 Gdynia has led the work of the Secretariat of the Union of the Baltic Cities Commission on Transportation. The UBC gathers 106 cities in the Baltic Sea region. Within its activity the Commission prepared in May 2009 a grant competition for organizing "Car-Free day", which falls on the September, 22nd 2009. The aim of the competition was to raise awareness of the local communities in the field of transportation and to encourage as many inhabitants as possible to use of the public, pedestrian and bicycle transportation. The first prize was awarded to the City Hall of Słupsk. Three other equal awards of 1500 euro have been given to: the City Hall of Liepaja (Latvia), the City Hall of Panevezys (Lithuania) and the City Hall of Gdynia.


THE VISIT OF GEORGIA REPRESENTATIVES

On 31st May - 2nd June 2009 the representatives of the City of Rustavi (Georgia) made a study visit to Gdynia. The visit has been organized within the implementation of the project: "AIA - the social dimension of economy in the city and region of Rustavi". The project is carried out by the Association for the Economic Development of Communities from Szczecin in the cooperation with the City of Gdynia and the City of Rustavi in Georgia. The project is co-financed within the foreign assistance programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland in 2009. The main aim of the project is to strengthen the professional capacity of Georgian local government representatives in the practical use of financial instruments supporting development as well as the development of the institutional infrastructure supporting the local growth. During the study visit to our city the Gdynia Development Strategy, rules of functioning of the local government as well as investments financed from the European Union funds were presented to the delegation. The guests received information on the social building in Gdynia, the labour market and the organization of different forms of adult education as well as the rules of supporting the entrepreneurship in our city. The programme of the stay included also visits to the Pomeranian Science and Technology Park, to the EXPERYMENT Science Centre, to the Economic Foundation and to the Gdynia Labour Fair.

ALWAYS ACTIVE CONFERENCE

 

On 4-5 June 2009 Gdynia hosted participants in the international conference entitled “Always Active” - a part of the social campaign under the same name initiated by the UBC Commission on Sport. The campaign was launched in order to counteract social exclusion originating from advanced age as well as to prevent consequent physical mobility restrictions. The objective of the campaign was to promote an active lifestyle as a factor enhancing health and functional capacity. This event was organised by the aforementioned commission, the City of Gdynia and Senior Activity Centre in Gdynia. It was attended by people professionally responsible for organising free time and for disease prevention for the elderly in various Polish cities. Gdynia hosted speakers from five European countries who presented best practices from their cities as well as innovative projects concerning anactive lifestyle among elderly people. Prof. Herbert Löllgen - President of German Federation of Sports Medicine introduced the topic of healthy lifestyle and presented a lot of interesting medical facts. Speakers from Sweden - Thomas Gustafson, Per-Inge Gustavsson and Per Jonsson showed us how elderly people remain active in Karlskrona. Heini Parkkunen - Executive Director of Baltic Region Healthy Cities Association Finland acknowledged the participants with various ways of encouraging elderly people to gym at home. Next guest - Kjetil Fossheim - Outdoors and Health Consultant at Central Agder Recreational Council convinced the participants that Kristiansand is a truly active city. Additionally, the conference attendees learned about interesting projects from Denmark led by Carsten Hansen and Ann Baunbæk Hansen - Sports consultants at Danish Company Sport Association.  Gdynia was represented by Bożena Zglińska (Senior Activity Centre) and Katarzyna Stec (Municipal Social Welfare Centre). Their speeches showing active lifestyle of Gdynia inhabitants were supported by practical aspects as we took part in dancing classes (led by Zuzanna Zalewska from Strefa Tanga Foundation) and music classes organised on a daily basis for senior citizens from Gdynia. All the people taking part in this event were invited to the celebrations held on the occasion of the 5th Anniversary of establishing Gdynia University of the Third Age. It took place in the Musical Theatre on Friday (5th June) and the participants watched a marvellous show prepared especially for this occasion. “Always Active” conference was as a great opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences from various cities in the Baltic Sea Region, which may result in interesting projects in future whose objective will be to encourage elderly people from our cities to remain physically and mentally active.

KIELER WOCHE 2009

On 20-28th June Gdynia participated in the "Kieler Woche" - an international Kiel Week including sailing races and several cultural and sport events. This year a brilliant German swimmer Franziska van Almsick opened the festivity, which took place for the 127th time.

During the event the "32nd International Market" was organised where the representatives of the countries from all over the world presented their cuisine, art craft as well as informational materials at their national stands. At the Gdynia's stand the visitors were invited to visit Gdynia during the Tall Ships' Races 2009. The promotional and informational materials about Gdynia as well as brochures about the Pomorskie Voivodeship were also presented.

The "Kieler Woche" was accompanied by the "International City Forum", which this year was devoted to the energy policy in the sister cities and associated cities of Kiel. The official delegation from Gdynia and a representative of the Sejmik of the Pomorskie Voivodeship also participated in the Forum. The sister city delegations, including the representatives of Gdynia met with Ms. Cathy Kietzer, Chairperson of the Kiel City Council.

During the "Kieler Woche" the German-Polish Association in Kiel organised as usual a festive meeting that was attended among others by the Vice-Consul of the Republic of Poland to Hamburg as well as by the representatives of Gdynia. Within the cooperation with Kiel Gdynia handed over a number of the titles of the Polish literature to the library run by the POLONUS Association for Development of the Polish Culture in Kiel.


THE TALL SHIPS' RACES 2009

Tall Ships' Races 2009
On 2-5th July 2009 Gdynia became the world's sailing capital. Over 100 greatest tall ships moored at the Gdynia's wharf, including the largest in the world training tall ship "Sedov" or British "Lord Nelson" - the only in the world tall ship fully adjusted to the integration races for the crewmen with disabilities. The event was officially opened on the 2nd July at 2.00p.m. onboard "Dar Pomorza" - the frigate, which celebrated her centenary this year. "Dar Pomorza" played a role of an honorary stand during the Great Parade of Sail.

During these four days the crew members took part in sport competitions as well as in the colourful Crew Street Parade, which was going along the main streets of Gdynia. The most outstanding sportsmen and the most distinguishable participants of the Parade have been awarded prizes by the representatives of the Sail Training International - the co-organizer of the races and the promoter of sailing idea among the youth.

Gdynia's part of the Tall Ships' Races was of a unique character this year also due to some other reason: it was the occasion to commemorate Janka Bielak - the Pole who died in January 2009. She played a significant role in the promotion of sailing overcoming political divisions.

On the 4th July the Holy Mass for late Janka Bielak was said in the Church of the Virgin Mary in Gdynia. The Mass was attended by the representatives of Gdynia authorities, representatives of the Polish sailing circles as well as the Sail Training International and the captains of the vessels participating in the races.

Furthermore the city authorities participated in the wreath laying ceremony on a grave of Cdre Julian Czerwiński, brother of Janka Bielak and the commander of ORP "Iskra" for many years. They laid an occasional wreath in testimony of their gratitude for his whole work for the benefit of Gdynia and its maritime heritage.

The final part of the races was the unforgettable Great Parade of Sail, admired by numerous tourists and inhabitants of Gdynia. In this way the vessels leaving Gdynia started a first leg of the Tall Ships' Races - a race from Gdynia to St. Petersburg.


THE VISIT OF GDYNIA SISTER CITIES' REPRESENTATIVES

The organization of the first part of the Tall Ships' Races 2009 in Gdynia was an occasion for the representatives of Gdynia Sister Cities to visit our city. On 2-5th July 2009 the official delegations from Kotka (Finland), Kristiansand (Norway), Karlskrona (Sweden), Baranovichi (Belarus), Seattle (USA), Haikou (China) and Plymouth (Great Britain) took part in this marvelous sailing celebration and had the opportunity to admire over 100 vessels which came to Gdynia.

During their visit the guests participated i.a. in official meeting with the representatives of Gdynia authorities and got familiar with the touristic potential of our city, visiting i.a. the Gdynia City Museum and the Old Vehicle Museum in Gdynia.

GDYNIA BUSINESS WEEK 2009!

Held for the first time, „Gdynia Business Week” was organised thanks to the commitment of Seattle-Gdynia Sister City Association, Foundation for Private Enterprise Education as well as Gdynia City Hall. Based on Washington Business Week programme, this summer school was created to enable young people to get familiar with business issues.

Throughout the whole week (August 15-21) more than 90 students from 22 Gdynia high schools worked in their small companies led by American advisors – experienced business people – and supported by Polish high schools teachers of English and entrepreneurship. During a very active week the companies tackled a business simulation game, created innovative products and prepared for the trade show. All these actions aimed at encouraging shareholders to invest in young companies’ new projects. The said shareholders represented Gdynia companies strongly rooted in the market. They were willing to share their knowledge and experience with the programme participants.

After one week of meetings and various activities the students, together with advisors, educators and invited guests took part in the official Graduation Ceremony. Ewa Łowkiel - Deputy Mayor of Gdynia and Steve Hyer – Executive Director of Foundation for Private Enterprise Education presented certificates to all the participants and prizes to winning companies.

Company H led by Darby Vigus from Monroe oraz Izabela Szlas (educator from Gdynia) won the BizSim. Company G with Monika Cretu (advisor) and Anna Spryszyńska (educator) received most funds from the shareholders. Their product was Bliss – a micro size robot that injected into a human body helps to detect and cure liver cancer. The students in professional doctor attire gained the judges’ favour. Whereas the presentation with the highest received score was the one done by company G, led by Adam Strutynski (manager with Polish roots who works with large construction projects in Washington State) and Magdalena Kornysik (educator).

The students proudly showed their certificates to parents present at the ceremony and enthusiastically talked about the past week. They underlined that thanks to this week they improved their language skills as the whole project was conducted in English, developed their teamwork abilities and also gained self-confidence, especially while giving public speeches. 

The most important guest who visited the students on Thursday, 20th August was the President of the European Parliament, Professor Jerzy Buzek. He shared his thoughts on the situation in the global market.
