KALININGRAD (Russia)

kaliningradThe capital of the westernmost region of Russia, totally separated from the rest of the country, Kaliningrad is a gate to Western Europe and an intersection of trade routes. Kaliningrad has a history of over 700 years, and once it was the capital of East Prussia. The city numbers 423 000 inhabitants.

The beginnings of the city date back to the year 1255 when Königsberg castle, from which Kaliningrad later developed, was established. From the very beginning of its existence, the city was a member of the Hanseatic Union. Königsberg was renamed Kaliningrad in 1946. In connection with the variety of cultures, Kaliningrad is sometimes called a "Small Russian America".

As far as the attractions of the city are concerned it is worth mentioning that in Kaliningrad there is Amber Museum having over 6 000 exhibits. The 19th century Cathedral is also worth visiting together with the tomb of Immanuel Kant, a famous philosopher.

Kaliningrad is the only not freezing Russian port by the Baltic Sea. The port was established in 1945 on the premises of the former port of Königsberg, which had been destroyed. As far as the economy is concerned, Kaliningrad is a centre of fishing industry, paper and food industry as well as extraction of natural resources (oil, amber, peat, coal).

In Kaliningrad there is "Yantar" free economic zone which is favourable to the influx of businessmen and tourists from all over the world. Among the investors establishing their companies in the territory of this zone the following countries are present: Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Poland and Israel. The agreement on cooperation between the cities was signed on 27th October 1994. On 31st July 1997 it was substituted by a new, modified twinning agreement which was signed in Gdynia for an indefinite period of time. The agreement stresses cooperation in establishing direct contacts between state organisations as well as social and trade organisations and companies of both cities in the sphere of production, trade, culture, science and environmental protection.
