HAIKOU (China)
The city of Haikou is the capital of Hainan Province, the youngest one in China, established in 1988 and being China’s biggest special economic zone. Haikou is located on the southern coast of the Qiongzhou strait on the Hainan island. The city created in 1926 is the political, economic and cultural centre of the island. The merging with Qiongshan City in 2003 enlarged Haikou into a city of 2 304 km2, with a population of about 1,7 million inhabitants. The sea port located in Haikou plays an important role in the city’s economy. Food, electronics and textile industry are the basic branches of industry in Haikou. The city is an important tourist centre. Haikou participates in the “Healthy Cities” Programme carried out by the World Health Organisation and aimed at improving health conditions in cities.
The Agreement on Cooperation was signed on 24th April 2006 for the period of five years. The agreement concerns cooperation in the fields of economy, entrepreneurship and business promotion. It also includes issues connected with science, technology, culture, education, tourism, spatial planning, health care, environmental protection and sport.
The effects of the cooperation:
- visit to Gdynia of the city authorities of Haikou, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, finance office as well as representatives of the tourist sector. Signing the letter of intent concerning mutual cooperation; study visits to Gdynia companies which cooperate with Far East – September 2005
visit of Gdynia delegation to Haikou. During the visit an agreement on cooperation was signed. The delegation took part in study visits to the Special Economic Zone and Hainan Port Navigation Holding Co. – April 2006
