Ewa Łowkiel
Deputy Mayor of Gdynia

Responsible for education, health care and environmental issues. A degree in Polish studies.A graduate of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. Post-graduate studies at the University of Gdańsk. For many years, a teacher of Polish in a top-ranking secondary school in Gdynia.

Shortly before starting work with the local government, she presided over the Regional Educational Forum, whose aim was to introduce changes in the education system. Member of NSZZ "Solidarność" since 1980. she led the educational section of the union in Gdynia in 1992-98. She is whole-heartedly involved in building a system of education in Gdynia, owing to which young school leavers will be more employable. She thinks it equally important to create opportunities for the most talented as to develop a system of integration classes. She was the inititator of two new schools in Gdynia: the Municipal College, offering education for adult students, and the Local IT Academy CISCO. Thanks to her commitment, the number of secondary schools providing instruction in two languages has grown from one to four. The offers of integration classes and extra-curricular activities for all types of schools have been extended. She was actively involved in establishing the network of lower secondary schools in Gdynia.

She values enthusiasts, who despite difficulties achieve their goals thanks to their determination, in this way creating valuable things for others. She likes constructive polemics that encourage reflection and is an experienced negotiator.

She loves Zbigniew Herbert's poetry, adoring the multitude of shades of his irony. She would say to her students that he would get the Noble Prize, - "he didn't, unfortunately."

She is a native Gdynia resident. A Sagittarius. Married, with two sons. Her husband works for Stocznia Gdynia S.A.
