HOST PORTS MEETING OF THE CULTURE 2011 TALL SHIPS REGATTAThe Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta, whose hosts beside Gdynia will be also the cities of Klaipeda (Lithuania) and Turku (Finland), is an event which is extremely important not only to the sailing enthusiasts. It is connected with the European Capital of Culture programme. The Finnish city of Turku has received this title in 2011. Therefore, this year's regatta will be accompanied by numerous cultural events that are to promote the cities participating in this international undertaking. So far Gdynia has had the honour of hosting four times the most beautiful sailing ships participating in the meetings "The Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races" (in the years: 1974, 1992 and 2003) and "The Tall Ships' Races" (2009). This year, between 2nd and 5th September 2011, the sailing ships will come for the fifth time to Gdynia, where they will finish the races. Polish sailing ships will participate in Gdynia final of the Regatta as well as Russian vessels Kruzenstern, Mir and Sedov, Dutch Thalassa, Tecla and De Gallant, the British Maybe, Jolie Brise and German Johann Smidt.On 6th April 2011 in Gdynia within the preparation to the above mentioned event a working meeting of host ports of the Regatta was held. The representatives of Gdynia, Klaipeda and Turku discussed the state of preparations to the event and the preliminary programme to be realised in a given port. The subject of the meeting was also the activities carried out jointly by three ports, including the promotion of the Regatta and the cultural events. The representatives of Turku presented the design of the prizes for the winning sailing ships that will be founded by all three cities. VISIT OF THE SAILING SHIP S/S SØRLANDET IN GDYNIABetween 22nd and 26th April Gdynia was visited by the Norwegian sailing ship s/s Sørlandet whose home port was Kristiansand (twin city of Gdynia).On its board the participants of the Canadian Class Afloat programme arrived. During the stay in Gdynia young sailors had an opportunity to get acquainted with the tourist attractions of the Tri-City as well as participate in the Easter mass celebrated on board of the sailing ship. Sørlandet is the oldest (still in service) three mast frigate built in 1927 in the Norwegian shipyard in Kristiansand. Its name stands for the "southern land" and refers to the southern region of Norway (of the same name). The tall ship, whose length amounts to about 65 m, has been built as a training ship for the future merchant marine officers. Ca.70 people and 15 crew members can stay on its board. In 1933 s/s Sørlandet crossed Atlantic as the first Norwegian training ship. In 1981 the frigate became famous for being the first ship to launch a Class Afloat programme addressed to women as well. VISIT OF THE DELEGATION FROM AXEL (HOLLAND)Between 1st and 7th May 2011 Gdynia hosted a delegation from the Dutch city Axel situated in the Zeeland province in the south-west part of Holland. The delegation consisted of the owners of the „Gdynia Museum" in Axel that is dedicated to the Second World War issues. The name of the museum was taken after the name of the "Gdynia" bridge in Axel, the exhibits in the museum present an interesting collection of military objects connected with the Second World War. In 2010 the Museum received a new exhibition that presented Gdynia, its history and current development. The official delegation of Gdynia participated in the ceremonial opening of this exhibition. The aim of this year's May return visit in Gdynia was a further development of cooperation as well as getting the guests acquainted with the history of the Tri-City, and in particular of Gdynia. This is why the programme of stay was dominated by the sightseeing of the places like Westerplatte, the Museum of the City of Gdynia and Artillery Battery in Gdynia Orłowo. The hosts of the meeting in Gdynia City Hall were Jerzy Miotke, Vice-Chairman of Gdynia City Council and Andrzej Bień, City Councillor.19TH TWIN CITIES SPORTING COMPETITIONOn 5-7th May 2011 the 19th Twin Cities Sporting Competition in Gdynia was organised. The Competition was officially opened by Ewa Łowkiel, Deputy Mayor. The youth from Kaliningrad, Karlskrona, Kiel, Klaipeda and Liepaja were participating in this year's edition. About 300 young sportsmen competed against each other in the following sports: football (boys), basketball (girls), judo (boys and girls) and swimming (boys and girls). Gdynia was the winner of all games in the general ranking, Kaliningrad won the second place and Liepaja won the third place. The official closing of the Sporting Competition and the prize-giving for the best teams connected with the traditional European road running race took place on Saturday of 7th May. Apart from typical sporting rivalry, the Sporting Competition serves creating ties with the sister cities. Their representatives had an opportunity to exchange experiences concerning sport life in their countries as well as to establish cooperation between the sports centres. The youth could get to know their peers from the neighbouring countries.INSPECTION VISIT OF SAIL TRAINING INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVESOn 17-19.05.2011 our city hosted the Sail Training International (STI) representatives - co-organisers of the „Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta" that is to be held in Gdynia on 2- 5 September 2011. The aim of the visit was an assessment of the city preparations for this event. The delegation consisted of: Robin Snouck Hurgronje, Culture Tall Ships Regatta 2011 Chairman, Peter Newell, Race Director and Adam Jasser, Sail Training Association Poland President. On 18.05.2011 in Gdynia City Hall a meeting of the guests from STI with the Regatta Organisational Committee was held. During this meeting the city activities concerning the preparation of the sailing infrastructure and promotion of the event were discussed. STI representatives visited the mooring place of the ships in the President's Basin. They visited also the Sports Arena and the Football Stadium in Gdynia as well as the facilities located on the grounds of the planned event. The guests assessed highly the state of city preparations to the September event. CONCERTS OF YOUTH BANDS FROM KARLSKRONAOn 9th - 10th June 2011 REPLAY and TRUMBOLAGET - two youth bands from Gdynia's twin city Karlskrona visited our city. Young people from both bands attend Kulturskolan school, where they learn to play diverse percussion instruments. REPLAY is a band of six boys aged 13-14, who play West African music on a traditional instrument called djembé, whereas TRUMBOLAGET is a band of seven boys aged 15-16, who play their own unique brand of music on the special kind of drums called „F-Taiko". Their music draws inspiration from the Japanese drum tradition taiko. During the stay in Gdynia both bands played concerts for the young people from Gdynia in Youth Culture Centre, School Complex no. 9, Music School and Art School Complex. The bands also played a concert in „Contrast Cafe". The performance of the young people from Karlskrona was met with spontaneous applause and appreciation.KIELER WOCHE 2011On 17th - 26th June The City of Gdynia presented its offer in Kiel at an international event "Kieler Woche" - Kiel Week. During "Kieler Woche" sailing races and a number of cultural and sport events are organized for the numerous tourists that come both from Germany and the whole Europe.During "Kieler Woche" the "34th International Market" was organised. The representatives from all over the world presented their stands on the international market. On each stand there was presented the national cuisine, handicraft items as well as informational and promotional materials. Gdynia, apart from presenting amber products, promotional materials of the city and the Pomeranian region, encouraged to visit our city in September 2011 during The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta. "Kieler Woche" was accompanied by the "International City Forum", whose subject matter was "Is the local democracy in crisis?". The official delegation from Gdynia participated in the Forum. The delegations from the invited sister cities took part in the meeting with Ms Cathy Kietzer, City Council Chairwoman. During the "Kieler Woche" the German-Polish Association in Kiel organised an annual integration meeting for the Polish guests who participated in "Kieler Woche". The Vice-Consul of the Republic of Poland to Hamburg and the representative of Gdynia also attended the meeting.VISIT OF SCOUTS FROM LATVIA AND BELARUS At the turn of June and July scouts from Latvia and Belarus visited the Tricity. Their stay was a part of "2011 Summer Campaign - East" conducted by "Szare Szeregi" Association. The City of Gdynia decided to financially support this campaign, and as a result the scouts visited our city on 28.06. and 1.07. In order to present Gdynia's tourist offer and the history of the city, a busy programme of the visit was prepared. It included visits to such places as: Gdynia Vehicles Museum, Gdynia City Museum, ORP Błyskawica, "Dar Pomorza", Gdynia Aquarium, Experyment Science Centre and a cruise to Hel. Each group also participated in the meeting in Gdynia City Hall, which was lead by the City Councilor- Andrzej Bień.THE CZECH WINNERS OF THE COMPETITION VISIT GDYNIAIn connection with the Polish Presidency of the EU Council the polish Institute in Prague organized an art competition entitled: "Why is the flounder flat?". The aim of the competition was promotion of Poland and the cities by the Baltic Sea. The winner of the competition received a prize in the form of a weekend-long visit in Gdynia. The prize-winner - Aneta Franowa from the Czech Republic stayed with her family in Gdynia on 22nd - 25th July 2011. during the stay she got acquainted with the tourist attractions of Gdynia, Tricity and Kashubia.VISIT OF THE EU TRANSPORT ATTACHES IN GDYNIAAccording to the calendar for the Polish Presidency of the EU Council on 28th July 2011 there was organized an away session of the EU Transport Attaches in Gdynia. The meeting was organized on the request of the Ministry of Infrastructure in Warsaw in cooperation with Gdynia City Hall, Port of Gdynia Authority SA (PGA SA) and Maritime Office in Gdynia. The main theme of the meeting was the development of the European sea ports illustrated with an example of the sea port in Gdynia. During the meeting a group of forty experts got acquainted with the development strategy of the sea port in Gdynia and the development of the elements that ensure security of maritime traffic on the reservoirs adjacent to Gdynia.VISIT OF THE SAILING SHIP "STAD AMSTERDAM" TO GDYNIAOn 17-20 August 2011 Gdynia hosted a Dutch tall ship "Stad Amsterdam", the only sailing clipper in Europe. All the sailing enthusiasts had a chance to visit the ship and meet the crew who was very happy to explain operating principles of the deck equipment.This extraordinary ship was built thanks to cooperation between the City of Amsterdam and a recruitment and HR services company - Randstad. Young unemployed people were engaged in constructing the ship, gaining valuable training and work experience. By combining love for beautiful ships with the engagement of the originators and the workers, in 2000 there was launched a three-masted clipper with the sails measuring a total of 2200 square feet and 60 metres long wooden deck. This fast tall ship participates in regattas and is used for cadet training. There are also special training trips organized onboard the ship to teach young enthusiasts how to become a professional sailor. In summer months "Stad Amsterdam" is sailing in European waters, and in winter it repositions to the Caribbean.GDYNIA BUSINESS WEEK 2011On 21st-26th August 2011 the third edition of "Gdynia Business Week" took place in our city. The program was carried out by the City Hall of Gdynia in cooperation American partners (Foundation for Private Enterprise Education and Seattle-Gdynia Sister City Association). The event was organized under the honorary patronage of the Minister of Education and the U.S. Embassy with the support of Boeing Corporation and Microsoft. Moreover, the undertaking was held under the media patronage of Gazeta Wyborcza, Radio Gdansk and a web portal trojmiasto.plWithin the framework of the program 81 students from 19 secondary schools in Gdynia and their 6 American peers in groups-companies tried their hand at business simulation called BizSim, created their own innovative products and prepared presentations for shareholders. The student companies were supervised by business mentors from American companies and the teachers from the schools in Gdynia. Apart from practical classes students participated in thematic presentations. The presentations were conducted by the representatives of Microsoft, Boeing and thriving companies from Gdynia and other Polish cities. The program ends with Trade Show, during which the student companies and their products are assessed by the representatives of business. The Minister of Education Ms Katarzyna Hall participated at the closing ceremony of "Gdynia Business Week 2011". The parents of the students participating in the program and the principles of the schools were also invited to the closing ceremony. All the students were awarded with certificates and the representatives of the best student companies received prizes. The biggest money contribution from the shareholders received company F led by advisors James Barlow and Katarzyna Nozdrzykowska (IV High School) - their product was F-Ray, a special device for fast and easy painting of walls and rooms. In the category BizSim - the business simulation that was unbeatable was company D led by Fred McDonald and Malgorzata Paszkowska (I Academic High School). In the category "Facebook challenge" the winner was company B led by Ken Globerman and Anna Próchnicka ( Mechanic Schools). When it comes to the presentation that was voted the best by the jurors was given by company G advised by Darby Vigus and Anna Kulinska ( School of Economics and Administration).CULTURE 2011 TALL SHIPS REGATTA Between 2-5 September 2011 as part of "The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta" the most beautiful tall ships in the world visited Gdynia for the fifth time. In spite of the late summer arrangement the weather perfectly corresponded with the whole event and as in previous editions, it attracted crowds of sailing enthusiasts and received very positive reception. This year's regatta had a different character from the previous editions because it was organized in connection with the fact that Turku received the title of The European Capital of Culture 2011. The race had two legs: first from Klaipeda (Latvia) to Turku (Finland), second from Turku to Gdynia. Our city as the final port was the place for handing in the awards. One of the most important trophies was "STI Friendship Trophy" which was given to "Dar Młodzieży" crew for the most significant contribution to the development of friendship and international understanding. The regatta was accompanied by various cultural events such as: sightseeing trips in the Cassubian region and Tricity, sport competitions for the crews, colorful Crews Parade along the streets of Gdynia, shanties concerts and a big concert at the municipal beach finished by the fireworks display. Tourists and Gdynia residents had a unique opportunity to visit the vessels which came to Gdynia and among them 13 the biggest in the world tall ships (class A and B). The special guest of the regatta was "Zawisza Czarny", who celebrated the 50th anniversary of ship commissioning and in connection to it among others a shanties concert was organized onboard and a film about the vessel and other tall ships was shown. The crowning of the whole event was a phenomenal Parade of Sail of vessels leaving Gdynia port, which was observed by crowds of residents and tourists. This year's regatta met with great interest which was confirmed by the participation of about one million six hundred thousand people during all four days of the event.GUESTS FROM KOTKA VISIT GDYNIAOn 2nd-6th September 2011 the City of Gdynia hosted the official delegation from our Finnish twin city Kotka. Although the formal agreement on cooperation was signed only in 1988, this year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the cooperation between the cities.The Finns met the city authorities and visited Port of Gdynia Authority, the Economic Foundation and A KuKu Art Association. The guests visited the Museum of the City of Gdynia, Gdynia Motor Vehicle Museum and they also had a chance to admire the ships gathered at the port during the event that took place at that time in Gdynia - "The Culture 2011 Tall Ships Regatta".On the occasion of celebration of the 50th anniversary of cooperation between Gdynia and Kotka "Kotkan Laulumiehet" - male choir from our twin city visited Gdynia. The choir consists of 51 members, but in Gdynia only 26 came to Gdynia to give a concert. In December 2010 the choir celebrated its 75th anniversary. The concert took place on 5th September 2011 in the City Theatre in Gdynia and it was met with a lot of enthusiasm from the big audience. The repertoire included Finnish folk songs, chanteys, Revelers' songs and arias from operettas.CONCERT OF LITHUANIAN YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAOn 11th September in the City Theatre in Gdynia "Svajonė" - Youth Symphony Orchestra from the music school in Alytus, the city that lies on the banks of the Nemunas River and is the sixth biggest city in Lithuania, gave concert in our city."Svajone" was established in 2000. At present the orchestra consists of 90 musicians. The musicians are not only the students and the teachers from the music school in Alytus, but also the graduates of the school that attend various institutions of higher education in Lithuania. The orchestra gave concerts in Lithuania as well as in Spain, Latvia, Estonia and Poland. The concert in Gdynia was organized in cooperation with Honorary Consulate of Lithuania. The orchestra performed compositions by Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Grieg as well as Astor Piazzolla and the performance that suited the taste of the audience from Gdynia.VISIT OF THE ARTIST FROM DUNKIRKOn 18th-20th September 2011 Emilien Leroy, a musician and performer from Dunkirk Gdynia's twin city, visited our city. Mr Leroy came to Gdynia in connection with a project called "From one harbour to the other". The project's aim is to record characteristic sounds in different European ports and create a sound postcard from each port. This artistic undertaking is the official project in the series of events organized in connection with the fact that Dunkirk will be designated a Regional Capital of Culture from April 2013 to April 2014. During his visit in Gdynia the artist recorded the sounds on different wharves of the Port of Gdynia and at the Harbour Master's Office.STUDY VISITS OF FOREIGN MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES In connection with Polish Presidency in the EU Council between June and September our city was visited by three delegations of journalists from the following countries: Switzerland - 14.06., Ethiopia - 29.07. and Russia - 21.09. The programme of all visits included the presentation of the most interesting tourist attractions in the city. In order to familiarize the guests with an investment offer of the city and the port, Swiss and Russian journalists participated, together with the port representative, in a cruise in the Port of Gdynia, whereas journalists from Ethiopia took part in the study visit to Pomeranian Science and Technology Park and met with the organizers of Globaltica Festival, which took place at that time. The aim of all visits was to present Gdynia's tourist and investment offer and establish prospective cooperation with chosen organizations and institutions. GENERAL CONFERENCE OF THE UNION OF THE BALTIC CITIESThe XI General Conference of the Union of the Baltic Cities took place in Liepāja, Latvia, on 4-7 October 2011. Gdynia has been the member of the Union of the Baltic Cities since 1995 and there are two secretariats of the Commissions on Sport and Transport. The delegation from Gdynia that represented two commissions visited Liepāja. During the conference there were presented the presentations of the Commission on Sport and on Transport concerning the current and future actions of the commissions. At this year's conference the Union of the Baltic Cities celebrated its 20th anniversary of foundation. At the conference there were 200 participants from 76 member cities. During the conference there was presented the history of development of the cities that are the members of the Union of the Baltic Cities over the last 20 years. There were also presented the possibilities of the organization's development in the next 10-20 years. The representative of DG Regio from the European Commission acquainted the audience with the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The historic development of the Baltic Sea Region served as the main subject of the Polish Ambassador in Riga. The representative of SIEMENS Finland in his presentation concentrated on the challenges and the possibilities connected with the development of the Baltic economic cooperation. In the second day of the conference there was organized a series of workshops about enhancing the economic attractiveness of the cities, preventing the climate change and about the challenges connected with an ageing society issues. The second day of the conference was devoted to the internal affairs of the Union of the Baltic Sea. Creating a new Commission on Local Safety was also accepted in the second day of the conference. There was also decided that the next XII General conference in 2013 will be held in Mariehamn, Finland.GDYNIA DURING 2011 SEATTLE POLISH FILM FESTIVAL At the beginning of November Seattle-Gdynia Sister City Association for the 19th time was an organizer of Seattle Polish Film Festival. The festival, which aim is to present the output of polish cinema to wider audience and Seattle residents, but also promote young artists, is organized yearly since 1992. Presented productions are the newest full-length, independent, documental or animation films. This year's festival was inaugurated with Feliks Falk's film "Joanna" and apart from it the viewers had an opportunity to see such productions as: „Career of Nikoś Dyzma", „Entanglement", „Erratum", „Flying pigs", „Rabbit a la Berlin", „Snow queen" or „Prisoners". However, from Gdynia's point of view the most important event was the screening of Antoni Krauze's film "Black Thursday" showing the events of December 1970 in our city."Black Thursday" was the winner of 2011 Viewers Choice Award of the 2011 Seattle Polish Film Festival. The screening was also accompanied with the meetings in which the film director Antoni Krauze and the producer took part. Their subject matter was presenting the city of Gdynia, its present time, future and history, with the main focus on the events presented in the film, and also bilateral cooperation with the city of Seattle. Both the film screening as well as up to date information on the city were widely recognized by the audience and certainly contributed to popularizing and broadening the knowledge concerning Gdynia and Polish history among Seattle residents. FEAST OF KARLSKRONA IN GDYNIAOn 7th December 2011 we celebrated the Feast of Karlskrona, which has been the twin city of Gdynia since 9th November 1990. As part of this event the "Karlskrona Roundabout" at the junction of Chrzanowskiego and Polska streets, the name of which was approved by the resolution of Gdynia City Council, was solemnly opened. In the Tourist Information Centre at 10 Lutego Street 24 the opening of a photo exhibition "Karlskrona - Gdynia's twin city" was held. It was accompanied by a lecture about Karlskrona and southern Sweden carried out by Mr. Maciej Zborowski, a representative of Stena Line Tour Guide Department. After the lecture a contest was held with a voyage to Karlskrona for two people funded by Stena Lina as the prize. A performance of young people from the Swedish club in High School no. 2 was an additional attraction. Youngsters performed Swedish songs connected with Saint Lucia's Day. The Feast of Saint Lucy from Syracuse - the Festival of Light falls on 13th December and is traditionally celebrated with a procession of girls dressed in white robes and wearing crowns of candles on their heads. Songs connected with this feast are sung during the first half of December. Both events were attended by Karlskrona's official delegation led by the Mayor Camillą Brunsberg. The delegation had a meeting with Gdynia authorities and paid study visits to the Pomeranian Science & Technology Park as well as the Port of Gdynia Authority.
