www.klaipeda.ltKlaipeda is situated on the East Coast of the Baltic Sea, by the river Nyemen. It was granted city rights in the year 1254. Destroyed at the end of World War II, it developed to become an industrial and port city after the war. Klaipeda district is the only Lithuanian district located on the coast of the Baltic Sea and the port of Klaipeda is Lithuania's most important seaport. As far as the number of inhabitants is concerned (194 000), it is the third largest Lithuanian city. Klaipeda plays the role of a cultural, industrial and science centre of western Lithuania. It is the marine business that constitutes the basis of Klaipeda's economy. Industries such as food industry, tobacco industry, production of electricity equipment and machinery as well as building, timber and furniture industry are important branches of city economy. 15 out of 100 most important companies in Lithuania have their seats in Klaipeda. The Free Economic Zone has existed in the city since 2001. Among the attractions of Klaipeda, the Sea Aquarium and Dolphinarium, being the only one in the Baltic countries, is worth mentioning. On 12th January 1993 there was signed an agreement on cooperation in the fields of culture, sport, transport (sea and land) and organisation of joint meetings of Chambers of Industry representatives. The effects of the cooperation:As a result of the cooperation in the so called Gdynia-Klaipeda-Karlskrona Triangle there was organized regatta between the three cities on the waters of the Baltic Sea Meeting of the Gdynia City Board and representatives of one of the private companies from Klaipeda on the possibilities of starting ferry services between our cities; as a result there was started a hydrofoil craft service between Gdynia and Klaipeda in 1995 Cooperation on creating Euroregion- March-December 1997 Chamber of Commerce and Industry from Klaipeda and the Gdynia City Hall - economic mission of Lithuanian companies in Gdynia- March 1998 Stay of a delegation from Klaipeda in Gdynia connected with participation in the Polish-Lithuanian Forum of Self-governments in Warsaw- March-April 1998 Training of the Head of the Economic Development Department of the Klaipeda City Hall. The subject of the training was creating the strategy of development for Gdynia.
