Gdynia is a young, modern and vivid city immersed in the scenic coastal landscape: five sandy beaches (in the city centre, in Orłowo, Redłowo, Oksywie and Babie Doły) in close vicinity of the green slopes of the moraine hills surrounding the city from the west (including the protected cliff towering the sea in Orłowo). The forest overgrowing the hills takes up nearly 43% of the city, offering opportunities for outdoor activities such as walking tours, cycle excursions, mountain biking competitions in the many picturesque valleys and ravines. Guided walks along the seashore, beach contests, swimming lessons and golf are available to holiday makers. In 2005, the beach in the city centre was awarded the prestigious international certificate of Blue Flag recognising the high sanitary and safety standard. Each year in early Spring National Meeting of Travellers, Sailors and Mountain Climbers is held in Gdynia, which makes the major forum of Polish (including Poles living abroad) travellers and explorers' environment. Everyone has the opportunity to share their experience and opinions on the voyages and explorations, show the films and pictures. Those meetings are always crowned with the award of Colossuses - statuettes resembling the big statues in the Easter Island - decided upon by the chapter of experts and specialist journalists.
